Netflix Is A Beautiful Thing; Or, how
snogged became a Trekkie
In 2009, this movie came out that was a reboot of a popular and well-loved franchise. I'm sure you've heard of it: Star Trek, directed by J.J. Abrams. Up until this film's premiere, I had never watched any of the Star Trek series nor had I seen the other movies. Sure...I had some exposure to it. I knew of the characters - Kirk, Spock, Picard, Seven of Nine, Uhura; knew some of the famous lines; basically, knew enough to get by thru other shows I watched and friends I had.
My friends took me to see the movie in 2009. I followed it up with the films that premiered in 2013 and 2016.
Then, I met this kid in the play I was in this spring who goes by the name of Danny. His knowledge of the Star Trek universe superseded anything I had ever seen before. He is a walking encyclopedia. He also appeared quite bothered that my only exposure to the show had been through the rebooted films. He convinced me to watch the first episode of Enterprise and "The City at the Edge of Forever" from the Original Series.
Can you guess which one I loved more?
:P
Thanks to Netflix, Nick and I have been able to start the Original Series from the beginning and I am absolutely loving it. It's classic nostalgia and surprisingly progressive for it's time. Favorite characters: Yeoman Janice Rand and Spock.

Glad you and Nick seem to be enjoying it though!

I'm sure I'm not going to love it all. LOL.

Then there were seven each of Deep Space Nine (my favourite) and Voyager.
Then foor of Enterprise, which could have had a full run if the writing had been as strong an dth econfidence in the show strong enough in that as it was in Season Four.
There was also an aborted series which, after Star Wars, was adapted to become The Motion Picture.
My last Trek movie was First Contact with the Borg. Not seen one since; long before Abrams who admitted h enever liked Star Trek; was in fact a Star Wars fan, and beat all six of the original movies put together witrh The Force Awakens.
Love to join you on the journey; also working on my own fan reboot of the original show. Nearly ready I think, to go.

"Surprisingly progressive". Oh, no, you really have no idea yet. Star Trek featured the first interracial kiss on television. And having a Russian and a black woman on the bridge was also ground breaking back then. Gene Roddenbury wanted it to be even more progressive, as far as the women roles went, but had to reign it in to have a show at all. The Next Generation is closer to his vision where that's concerned, FYI.
Spock is still my favorite :-)

Yep. I knew about the kiss.
I also know how NBC let Roddenbury get away with this because the show was set in space 200 years into the future.
I really loved "Number One" from the original pilot ("The Cage.") I know she was cut after the pilot for being "too smart." I heard there's rumors circulating that she's returning for Discovery.

My friend just impulse purchased TNG on blu-ray so I'm thinking I might need to borrow it from him or at least coordinate some kind of rewatch.

I've heard that I will likely love Voyager because of Captain Janeway.

This post makes me unreasonably happy. Perhaps in part because I'm wearing my Star Trek undies right now :)
My daughter and I have been just putting the finishing touches on our Star Trek costumes for this year's Fan Expo. She loves the new films as well (me, not as much) and I also used Netflix to make her watch at least one episode of every franchise there is. She seems to be big Wesley Crusher fan :)
I'm pleased to hear you like TOS so much and I just want to squee at you about all the amazing episodes there are, but I'll just say this: Let That Be Your Last Battlefield is genius, A Piece of the Action made me laugh so hard, and you should watch Wrath of Khan as soon as humanly possible. And you should probably just give Enterprise a miss, because. You know. That's what Trekkies do :)

I ordered a Star Trek TNG-inspired dress from Think Geek the other day. I just couldn't resist. Plus...my supervisor is a Star Trek fan so if I played it right, I could probably wear it at work.
My friend Danny doesn't like the new movies either.
I like them because I didn't know any different. :P
I would love to squee with you about episodes any time. We watched "What Little Girls Are Made Of" last night and I was so happy to see Lurch! (I spent much of my childhood watching one episode of "Addams Family" on VHS over and over again.)

I've never been a Star Trek fan although I have seen various episodes, and movies, here and there. My roommie introduced me to Star Trek Continues which is a fan vid series finishing up the original five year mission. Because I enjoyed that I picked up the original series DVDs at the library and we've been watching them together. I'm enjoying them more than I thought I would.
It's been a rewatch for Leslie. She enjoyed them in the original tv showings and knows lots of trivia which she's been delighting in sharing with me. We're towards the end of season 2.
Oh, and I also like the new movies although I wish they were more socially conscious and had stronger female characters. I can't help comparing Uhura to the women of Babylon 5 and Uhura just doesn't come off well.

I've heard about Star Trek Continues. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed that.
I wish the new movies were more socially conscious as well.

I've actually only seen a couple of episodes from each series, I think.

I not fanatical enough about Star Trek to call myself a Trekkie, but I love the original series (Spock is absolutely my favourite!) and I really enjoyed watching Voyager too.

Also "not in front of the Klingons" is still a great line.

My hubby likes Star Trek IV.
