I want to do a proper update, but I don't really know to say. I mean, there's plenty of television shows I could review and I saw Gnomeo and Juliet over the weekend (very cute, by the way). But so many others have already said what I would say about these things that I'm not sure I want to rehash it.
What I can say though is this...over the weekend, I had the "joy" of going to my grandpa's house (he passed away last year and Grandma passed away about a dozen years ago) to sort through ornaments, Grandma's jewelry, scarves, doilies, etc. with my sisters and cousins.
It was interesting and bittersweet to see what was left behind and I wound up claiming a few things. Namely, I came home with a pearl necklace (it's fake but I love it), a black and silver brooch, a small black jewelry case, two paisley scarves, a black shawl, a few old-fashioned ornaments, and despite not being religious, I nabbed the nativity set that I used to set up for Grandma every year. I also got to see the crocheted quilt that I'm supposed to receive on my wedding day (Grandma made one for each of her grandkids.) It's mint green and it's gorgeous. I could have taken it home with me if I'd wanted to, but I told my mom I wanted to wait so she's holding onto it for me.
In other news, Wisconsin's new governor is a douchebag. He's trying to push through a law that would make "almost every public employee (excluding police and firefighters) would have to contribute 5.8 percent toward their pensions, and state workers would pay 12.6 percent of their health insurance premiums." He's also planning to shut down the collective bargaining rights that have been in place for the last 50 years and he's only having one public hearing.
In a stunning example of civics and civil protests, the entire Madison-area school district has shut down today because teachers are calling in "sick" and rallying at the capital in protest.
I only hope this "we're not going to take it" stance has an impact on the voting powers of our legislators and our douche-bag governor.

(regarding the Nan thing, I'm sort of having to do that now because mine's gone into a care home and has Alzheimers. But sadly she just gave away most of her stuff before she went in and so anything I'd have wanted has gone. :-( I did get her Black Beauty china horse though)

Glad you got something to help you remember your Nan.

My dad always put money towards his 401K & the company he worked for (he's retired) contributed.
Health Insurance - I'm not sure if they are talking that they pay a portion of the premium & pay co pays or what. The thing about Health Care insurance is that a lot of private companies aren't paying for it because its getting to expensive for them. You then have the problem with the minority going to the ER for every little ailment which drives up the cost.
& most of my feelings are based on what some of the state workers here in MN are like....

Now, teachers should not be getting cut on anything.
Some other state employees should just because of the fact (& again, based on the ones I have knowledge of here) they bitch & moan & always want new things no matter what the cost, everything is making them sick...blah blah blah.
I'm not sure if its passed or not, but our lovely legislatures think that they should be allowed to put a wage freeze on teachers wages for the next two years, even though the teachers (at least in Roch) have taken a wage freeze.
I think all our political morons should take a pay cut by 80% & live on 20%....clear all budgets right up....

If politicians and wealthy folks were willing to give up a portion of what they get, the spines of the middle class might not need to be broken.
