I want to do a proper update, but I don't really know to say. I mean, there's plenty of television shows I could review and I saw Gnomeo and Juliet over the weekend (very cute, by the way). But so many others have already said what I would say about these things that I'm not sure I want to rehash it.

What I can say though is this...over the weekend, I had the "joy" of going to my grandpa's house (he passed away last year and Grandma passed away about a dozen years ago) to sort through ornaments, Grandma's jewelry, scarves, doilies, etc. with my sisters and cousins.

It was interesting and bittersweet to see what was left behind and I wound up claiming a few things. Namely, I came home with a pearl necklace (it's fake but I love it), a black and silver brooch, a small black jewelry case, two paisley scarves, a black shawl, a few old-fashioned ornaments, and despite not being religious, I nabbed the nativity set that I used to set up for Grandma every year. I also got to see the crocheted quilt that I'm supposed to receive on my wedding day (Grandma made one for each of her grandkids.) It's mint green and it's gorgeous. I could have taken it home with me if I'd wanted to, but I told my mom I wanted to wait so she's holding onto it for me.

In other news, Wisconsin's new governor is a douchebag. He's trying to push through a law that would make "almost every public employee (excluding police and firefighters) would have to contribute 5.8 percent toward their pensions, and state workers would pay 12.6 percent of their health insurance premiums." He's also planning to shut down the collective bargaining rights that have been in place for the last 50 years and he's only having one public hearing.

In a stunning example of civics and civil protests, the entire Madison-area school district has shut down today because teachers are calling in "sick" and rallying at the capital in protest.

I only hope this "we're not going to take it" stance has an impact on the voting powers of our legislators and our douche-bag governor.

Glad to hear the teachers and other workers are taking a stand. I'm from a family of teachers as well and this kind of treatment is sickening. There are some crappy things happening in the Iowa government right now too and if there's some kind of formal protest I would be thrilled to take part.

I would really love to get down to Madison today, but I don't think it'll be possible. :(

Forgot to say, for the meme:
sweet :)

AWW!

[identity profile] idioticonion.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 03:47 pm (UTC)(link)
DIRTY!

(regarding the Nan thing, I'm sort of having to do that now because mine's gone into a care home and has Alzheimers. But sadly she just gave away most of her stuff before she went in and so anything I'd have wanted has gone. :-( I did get her Black Beauty china horse though)

[identity profile] snogged.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL.

Glad you got something to help you remember your Nan.
*hugs*

Almost everywhere, politicians are using the economic crisis as an excuse to screw organized labor. And to generally screw employees.

[identity profile] snogged.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I think it's bullshit.
There have to better ways to fix the budget.

[identity profile] whichclothes.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree completely. And don't even get me started on what they're doing to higher education.

[identity profile] cee-m.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
GO TEACHERS, MAN!!! That's horrible. Jeezy creezy!

[identity profile] snogged.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It is horrible!
But I'm glad people are doing something.

I even wrote letters to my legislators!

[identity profile] velvetwhip.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Your governor is a dickweed...rather like ours (don't get me started on the wolf hunting or the law that allows pharmacists to refuse to dispense emergency contraception or drugs for postpartum bleeding).

*hugs* for the bittersweet day.

My one word comment: Steadfast.

*hugs back*

Thanks for the word.
Means a lot.

Ok, I may not understand everything about the pension & health care, but I do think that if a person gets one, they should pay something towards it.

My dad always put money towards his 401K & the company he worked for (he's retired) contributed.

Health Insurance - I'm not sure if they are talking that they pay a portion of the premium & pay co pays or what. The thing about Health Care insurance is that a lot of private companies aren't paying for it because its getting to expensive for them. You then have the problem with the minority going to the ER for every little ailment which drives up the cost.

& most of my feelings are based on what some of the state workers here in MN are like....

[identity profile] snogged.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
To the best of my knowledge, most teachers in this state have taken a dramatic cut in salary so that they wouldn't need to pay into pensions or healthcare. The benefits are what allow them to live on what they get.

[identity profile] lzod.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Now see, *that* I didn't know.

Now, teachers should not be getting cut on anything.

Some other state employees should just because of the fact (& again, based on the ones I have knowledge of here) they bitch & moan & always want new things no matter what the cost, everything is making them sick...blah blah blah.

I'm not sure if its passed or not, but our lovely legislatures think that they should be allowed to put a wage freeze on teachers wages for the next two years, even though the teachers (at least in Roch) have taken a wage freeze.

I think all our political morons should take a pay cut by 80% & live on 20%....clear all budgets right up....

[identity profile] snogged.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree.
If politicians and wealthy folks were willing to give up a portion of what they get, the spines of the middle class might not need to be broken.

[identity profile] lzod.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup & our education system would be much better funded

[identity profile] angelskuuipo.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad you found some mementos and memories to take with you at your Grandpa's house.

Your governor sounds like a first class moron.

[identity profile] snogged.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
He totally is.
He's acting like a dictator in some ways.

[identity profile] stablergirl.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Supportive.

I do what I can.

[identity profile] shakensilence.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Your governor sucks and I hope the teachers get something accomplished. Go teachers!!!!

My word for you: supportive.

You're awesome too!

[identity profile] hisui-ryoshi.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Man that sucks. I heard the WI governor sucked majorly, but it's nice to see that now people are standing up to him. Teachers are already so underpaid considering the future resources they are in charge of developing.

[identity profile] snogged.livejournal.com 2011-02-17 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
There have been huge rallies outside the capital for the last few days and I imagine there's plenty more to come.

Glad you were able to get a few mementos of your Grandma, the quilt sounds lovely.

Friendly!
