Killing Me Softly With Societal Ideals for Women

Today's woman might not be familiar to all of you, but I feel the need to squee about her anyways.

Jean Kilbourne, Ed. D

She's a feminist author, speaker, and filmmaker who focuses a lot of her work on the portrayal of women in advertising and how it relates to the prevalence of eating disorders and violence against women. Examples of her work include: Killing Us Softly: Advertising's Image of Women and So Sexy, So Soon: The New Sexualized Childhood and What Parents Can Do to Protect Their Kids.

Several years ago, I had the pleasure of attending a conference where she was keynote speaker and it was much like being in the presence of a celebrity.

Finished my first draft of my C2C fic last night. It's 5,032 words and I'm so grateful to have it done so soon before the deadline (my posting date is the week of the 13th-19th).

YAY!

She sounds awesome... I just may have to check her out... especially since I have a daughter.

I highly recommend her. She was a cornerstone during my Women's Studies education.

I've heard of her work. She's quite something.

She was positively groundbreaking when she started her work. :)

She sounds amazing. I particularly agree with the insidiousness of the early sexualisation of girls. My neice is 10 and she's already wearing miniskirts and wearing makeup.

10!

That's craziness.

I have to completely agree with this! In two of my psychology classes we have watched Killing Us Softly: Advertising's Image of Women and I loved it. It was also depressing how much advertising gets away with - then and even now to a degree. I'll have to look up So Sexy, So Soon: The New Sexualized Childhood and What Parents Can Do to Protect Their Kids!

You definitely should!

Good job on getting your essay done ahead of time!

It's a fic that I'll be posting tomorrow or Wednesday. But thanks!

Doh! I must have skipped over that word!
