I made a mistake.

He comes to you – wounded and dazed – unaware of the blood seeping through the thin fabric of his black t-shirt.

I made a mistake.

You move towards him – rubbing alcohol, gauze, and medical tape in hand. You clean up the mess he made because that’s what you do.

I made a mistake.

He gets his fix and knows he can come to you. He knows you won’t stop him. He knows you won’t tell.

I made a mistake.

He leans in, bruises your lips, and turns away.

But you know he’ll come back.

He always does.
