Get Your Ass Up, Show Me How You Burlesque
Aug. 6th, 2013 08:17 pmSo, I'm going to start this entry with a little bit of time travel.
On Sunday, I checked Facebook and noticed that one of my Zumba instructors had posted about Sunday night's class and she was asking for requests.
According to Tami, I was the only one who requested a song and that song was: "Show Me How You Burlesque" by Christina Aguilera. The routine we do involves the Charleston, jazz hands, and lots of kicks. It's so much fun. At Sunday's class, Tami dared me to come up to the front of class and teach it, but I chickened out and opted to stay in my spot.
Now that you know that, let's go to tonight:
I went to the Zumba class that Tami and Heather co-teach. The song from Sunday showed up on the playlist and I let out a whoop of excitement.
Tami once again challenged me to go to the front of class and this time I did it!
I co-taught the song with Heather, but she scooted over to one side so I was front and center. Thank goodness the class was full of smiling and encouraging faces.
Heather gave me a high-five at the end of the song. :)
I feel positively gleeful and so proud of myself for being brave.

on 2013-08-07 02:35 am (UTC)But now I have to ask-what is zumba?
Because if it involves jazz hands it is not what I was led to believe by other zumba practitioners. Granted the last time I talked to someone who did zumba it was CA. And she mentioned jumping up onto weight benches and non-stop high impact movement for an hour. There may have been dance moves mixed in to be honest. She just lost me at the jumping on and off things because all I could picture was breaking an ankle.
TLDR, everyone I know who does zumba loves it. It just seems vary what zumba is.

on 2013-08-07 02:46 am (UTC)There's definitely cardio. There's definitely dancing. Every class lasts an hour.
My basic understanding of a Zumba playlists is that they need to be 70-30. 70% of the songs need to be Latin/International. 30% of the songs can be pop/contemporary, hip-hop, funk, rock, jazz, etc.
I've worked with enough instructors at this point though to know that each one has a somewhat individualized style.
All in all, I think it's a blast and I go three times a week.
