As she thought of the jobs she had been fired from, it was Lindsey McDonald’s cold, hard stare that was permanently etched in the back of her brain. The mere thought of that short-lived experience gave her the shivers.
She had gotten the job as his administrative assistant by the mere fluke of running into a man named Holland Manners at a homeless shelter benefit. Holland had practically begged her to share her expertise with the firm and of course, she had happily obliged. She had learned early on that every little penny helped.
Holland assigned her to the lawyer from Texas and there weren’t enough fingers and toes on her body to count the number of times Lindsey had sent her home in tears. As much as she tried to find the colors in his darkness, she always came up empty-handed.
On her last day, he had grabbed her by her hair and pushed her up against the wall. His ice blue eyes burned with wicked intensity as he reminded her that Wolfram and Hart’s mission had nothing to do with helping the helpless.
He had fired her on the spot and Penny had never left a place faster.
After that, she made a promise to herself that she would never get involved with the dark side again.
