I'm snagging this from
secondmezzanine. I have no idea what will come from it except that I feel like I've got these letter circulating around my head and I want to get them out.
I'm not asking you to comment, as this is really just a way for me to purge some thoughts, but you can if you want to.
Loki,
I remember the first day we met. It was in January at one of the Midwinter festivals about seven years ago. You were dressed in black, your heavy cloak draped over your shoulders. Your hair was covered with a bandana and your eyes and nose were covered by a black leather mask. Ornate, silver bands covered your fingers, the tips of them sharpened to look like claws. You were introduced to me as S’s boyfriend and you barely spoke a word to me the whole night, except for when you demonstrated how those claw tips felt against the insides of my wrists.
It tickled, but it didn’t bother me, because deep down I knew that you wouldn’t hurt me.
Several months later, right before Faire season started, I called you with S’s permission because I wanted a protector from a sleazy guy who’d been hitting on me and I knew Nick couldn’t be there. It didn’t take long for you to agree. It also didn’t take long for the conversation to segue to our life stories. We bantered back and forth for hours and that summer, our friendship strengthened.
The trust we had in each other grew quickly. We became confidantes for each other and declared ourselves siblings. In short, you let me see the man behind the mask. You let me see the puppy hiding behind the cool eyes of the wolf.
Every Faire season since, you’ve watched my back and protected me when I needed it. Not only that, but you've saved my relationship with Nick a few times just by translating his male behavior in a way that made more sense to my brain.
But for the last three years, you’ve been in Texas and each year it’s been harder and harder to get in touch with you because cell phone coverage and internet access are not always reliable.
It’s been weeks since we’ve spoken, but I know that our bonds haven’t wavered. Someday soon, we’ll speak again.
Until then, I’ll miss you.
Stay in mischief,
Butterfly
