I totally blundered in cooking dinner tonight.
I had the mashed potatoes boiling contentedly on the stove top while my meatloaf cooked away in the oven.
Admittedly, I got a little swept up in online browsing while things were a cooking and I didn't think to check on the potatoes because I'm so used to just letting them boil themselves to softness and awesomeness. If I had done that before the oven timer had gone off for the loaf, I would have noticed that all the water had boiled off the potatoes and my spuds were stuck to a blackened pot.
The black spuds ended up in the garbage and I ended up having to make instant...my least favorite variety of potato.
I know it's not the end of the world. I know that it's most certainly a first world problem. But dammit, homemade mashed potatoes are my favorite things in the whole wide world and I rarely make them because I consider them to be a "special treat."
:/

on 2012-03-09 01:56 am (UTC)1. Peel potatoes.
2. Boil potatoes.
3. Mashed potatoes until all lumps all gone.
4. Add about a tablespoon of butter, a tablespoon of milk, and a tablespoon and a half of sour cream. :)
5. Mix together
6. Eat.

on 2012-03-07 05:15 pm (UTC)It happens to the best of us. I once baked a pecan pie for more than two hours, cos I didn't hear the timer go off and completely forgot about it. It was pretty much charcoal by the time I remembered.

on 2012-03-10 12:37 am (UTC)On a positive note, this only guarantees the next time you make mashed potatoes, they will be the best ones you've ever had. <3
