In Which I Am The Exact Opposite Of Cool
Nov. 1st, 2012 11:15 pmNick and I went to Bob's Burgers Live tonight. For those not familiar, Bob's Burgers is an animated show on FOX and features the voice acting styles of H. Jon Benjamin, Dan Mintz, Eugene Mirman, John Robers, and Kristen Schaal (<3).
I'm still not entirely sure why they chose to bring this show to Madison, WI, considering that it's not touring anywhere else, but I'm really not complaining.
So now for the reasons behind my subject.
1) Nick and I planned on eating at the Blue Plate Diner, but when we arrived it was crowded and we would have waited longer than necessary so we headed to the place across the street called Dobhan, which served a fusion of Nepal and Indian food. After we placed our order, I heard a familiar voice and lo and behold, freaking Kristen Schaal was inches away from our booth. The whole cast got seated at a large table about two feet away from us. It took all the willpower I had not to go up to them and say something because I didn't want to be rude and interrupt their meal. It was a bit surreal to hear bits and pieces of their conversation because Kristen and Eugene spoke pretty loudly.
2) We went to the theater, found seats and ended up sitting next to two ladies who'd also been at Dobhan and also had resisted the urge to go up to the cast.
3) The cast did stand-up comedy acts first. Kristen's was definitely my favorite with Dan and H. Jon Benjamin coming in a close second and third. Then, there was a live table reading from the upcoming Thanksgiving episode that was seriously funny. They only read the first act-and-a-half though to convince us all to watch the show.
4) Then came the Q&A. There was not a rush of people to the microphones and after the first few people went, I felt compelled to get up there. I waited my turn, intent on asking why they chose pink bunny ears for Louise, when all of a sudden, Kristen turns towards me, says "bang," and I found myself completely unable to remember my question. Instead, I told Kristen that I was a huge fan and that I recently was introduced to the show. And then the fan girl squeeing took a downward spiral into word vomit about seeing them at dinner and being in love with Flight of the Conchords and some other stuff I can't remember that just left me feeling embarrassed and awkward. Apparently, I must have seemed pretty endearing and genuine though because unlike other audience participants, I was not heckled. Instead, Eugene said that he doesn't normally do this, but he would cut off a lock of Kristen's hair and sell it to me for a price. I found that to be both sweet and funny of him so it got a chuckle out of me. Kristen smiled at me and told me to keep watching. She also said she was glad I got to hear her voice in a Nepalese restaurant and said that maybe it would happen again some day. After all of that though, I just...didn't even bother to ask my question and instead, just walked away from the microphone.
The next girl to ask a question admitted that she wasn't sure how she could follow that, but she ended up doing just fine.
To my credit, though, I'm glad I was not the one who asked them if they used a lever or a chain to flush their toilets.
5) I had a blast and I'm glad we went.
