I am reading Fifty Shades of Grey.

I know the reviews. I know that it's not great writing. I know that it was based off of a Twilight fanfiction, which given the repetition of certain things, really does not surprise me. I know that's it not even a good depiction of a BDSM relationship - for that, I'd acutally recommend Strike A Match, an AU Spara fic by [livejournal.com profile] purplefeen. Just saying.

With that said, it's a fluff piece that is absorbing enough to read quickly and that's what I need right now. Plus, Nick is out of the house this weekend so I have lots of hours to spent curled up on the couch and having myself a chick-lit/chick flick marathon with a comfy blanket and a mug of tea. :)

You'll have to let me know if it's worth a read.

Enjoy you chick-lit/chick flick weekend!

Well, in the last day-and-a-half, I've read more than half of the book (it's slightly over 500 pages.) There are definitely parts that frustrate me and it's no Claiming of Sleeping Beauty, but it's okay enough that I'm going to read the whole trilogy.

I would say that's your call.
Are you interested in reading it?

I have the same stigmas about it as you did. And while I enjoy reading BDSM fanfic stories, regular fiction of it doesn't do much for me. It's just that so many people have read it that I get curious.

Plus, I know my dad has read it. 4 of his female patients who had read it wanted to talk to him about it, so he did his research. It squicks me a bit to read it when I know my dad has. (Then again, my dad is the one who got me to watch Weeds.)

I enjoy reading BDSM fanfic stories too.

My co-worker is loaning me the trilogy so there's that.

I don't really find 50 Shades squicky though. I mean, I'm only half-way through it, but it doesn't seem too bad. More often than not, I just want to throttle Christian Grey for the way he treats the leading lady. I will warn you that Anastasia Steele is not a strong female character. She has some feistiness to her, thankfully, but she's definitely rocking the innocent, mostly complacent girl act.

Maybe someday. ::shrugs:: It's not like I don't have 40 some books already waiting to be read.

Right now I'm reading a friend's book about her RL experience of having been abused by a priest as a teenager.

Woah.
That sounds really intense...and sad...but hopefully a tale of resilience?

It seems okay so far. Not great literature or anything, but enough to entertain me for awhile.

Yeah, it is. She wrote it after she started therapy, told her family and successfully sued the local archdiocese. She's slowly healing.

I read the whole trilogy, even though I was not impressed with the whole publicity of it. What kept me going was the story line behind it. What was driving Christen Grey? and the fact that the female character had enough of a back bone to say no at times. There was a lot of sex, but I could not say it was BDSM really. It was no better, or worse than some of the Historical Romance things I have read. An easy, no thinking series.

I agree with your thoughts here. I finished the first book last night and started on the second one today.
