Starkid Summer Season 2014
Jul. 28th, 2014 05:05 pmI went to Chicago this weekend with my friend Angie for the Starkid Summer Season 2014 and had an awesome time.
For those who don't know, Team Starkid is a musical theater group that became an instant Youtube sensation with their first musical: "A Very Potter Musical." If you know about that musical, you may also know that the star, Darren Criss, now plays "Blaine" on the TV Show Glee. After AVPM, Team Starkid went on to perform a number of musical about different topics: from puberty to starship rangers to superheros to royal viziers. All of their videos are available for free online. Last year, Angie and I went to see "Twisted: The Untold Story of A Royal Vizier." It was amazing. This year, we saw "The Trail to Oregon" and "Ani: A Parody." We were the "Youtube" audience for both shows so perhaps, someday soon, you will get to hear how hard I laughed at these shows.
Now onto the weekend recap:
We drove to Chicago on Saturday and checked into our hotel, which was close to the O'Hare airport. From there, we got on the Blue Line to the downtown loop and got a little lost after following the advice of a kind stranger.
We managed to find our way to the theater and we stopped across the street at Cooper's to get dinner. Neither of us had been there, but Stage 773 recommended it. We had a truffle mushroom pizza and had Maeloc Blackberry Ciders (OMG. So amazing.) After dinner, we got in the line for the show and met Avery and David, a married couple from Ohio. They were adorable and funny and awesome and geeky. They also told us about this cool bookstore called "Unabridged." (We went there Sunday afternoon and I picked up a copy of The Eyre Affair: A Thursday Next Novel by Jasper Fforde.
The Saturday show was "The Trail To Oregon," which was a riff on the game "Oregon Trail." The audience got to select the cast's names as well as choose who "died" of dysentery. It was a funny show with a great cast. My favorite part was probably getting to see Joey Richter and Jaime Lynn Beatty interact together in a show again. Those two have surprisingly hot chemistry.
On Sunday, we slept in a bit and then made our way down to Chicago again. Angie wanted to stop at a place called "Franks 'n' Dawgs." It's been featured on the Food Network and the Travel channel. I had the Reuben Pulaski (polish sausage, sauerkraut, whole seed mustard, 1000 island dressing, potato cake & chives.) It was delicious. From there, we walked about 45 minutes to the street where the theater was. We walked around, checked out some shops, and had sushi for dinner. I had the chef's sushi platter with the Cubs roll. YUM!
We headed over to Stage 773 and managed to get there in time to meet Joey Richter and Jeff Blim in person because the afternoon showing of "Oregon" had just wrapped up. They were really friendly guys.
We also got to see the TARDIS car.

Sunday night's show was "Ani: A Parody." It was primarily a riff on the Star Wars prequels, but they had original trilogy jokes as well. After the show, we took some pictures with David and Avery and then we waited for the cast to come out.
Joe Walker was chilling at the bar after the show, but agreed to a photo. He was "Voldemort" in A Very Potter Musical, but has played multiple roles since.

He also made me laugh when I told him that I was a fan of the under-rated musical "Me and My Dick." Joe Walker played the dick in that show and Joey Richter played the teenage boy. Anyways, Joe just grinned and said: "So you like Dick, huh?" I laughed and said yes.
I also got a photo with Brian Holden, another actor in the cast. He was very sweet and thanked me for waiting so patiently.

All in all, it was an excellent trip. I hope they do something like this again next year.
