Spike watched as Riley dozed on the sofa, his chest rising and falling with each gentle snore. The boy looked as a peaceful as a child on Christmas Eve and it seemed a shame to wake him…
…Almost.
Spike dropped Riley's shoes into his lap and chuckled as the boy sat upright.
"Quit sawing logs, soldier. Time to cut down a Christmas tree."
"Where does one cut down a tree in California?"
"Anywhere there's a tree, long as your quick."
"We're not stealing a tree."
Spike's eyes twinkled with mischief.
"What if we borrow one and give it back?"
"Spike!"
