Day 9
In your own space, talk about what surprises you about fandom. It could be a pairing or fandom you never thought you'd like. A fanwork type you never knew existed. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Fandom has surprised me by showing me how to view characters and pairings that I may not have liked in canon in a different light.

For example, [livejournal.com profile] snowpuppies showed me how to appreciate Kennedy. (Originally, I viewed her as a bratty replacement for Tara and strongly disliked her characterization on the show.) But seriously, go read Driven. Or, you could go read All The Saints Are Dragons by [livejournal.com profile] velvetwhip. Both will help you better understand Kennedy as a character and maybe...just maybe...you might come to like her to.

Other authors have shown me that Buffy/Spike isn't so bad. (For real, I used to flat-out refuse to read stories featuring Buffy/Spike. I promise I'm better now.)

Fandom has also surprised me by being one of my biggest support networks. I have grown close to several people thru fandom to the point where we exchange holiday cards, chat by email during the work day, and even hang out in person. Two of my fandom friends even came to my wedding and I celebrated that by putting Robin Sparkles "Let's Go To The Mall" and Christian Kane's "The House Rules" into our reception playlist. People danced like crazy for Robin Sparkles and it made for an awfully fun evening.

I am so happy that fandom is part of my life and I look forward to many more years of being involved with it.

Oh! That sounds like the random story that I co-wrote with [livejournal.com profile] zoesmith. I don't even remember what it was called. I just remember it being a crack!fic. Glad it made you laugh. :P

I couldn’t stand Kennedy myself, but I put the responsibility for that on the writers. I’ve dealt with her very little in my own stories, but tried to be much more even-handed when I did, and I’ve actually asked for recs for good Kennedy character-development/exploration fics.

’Fraid I’m still not great on Buffy/Spike, though. Even when it’s not bad, it just doesn’t interest me, and there’s so much stuff that does.

It definitely takes a certain kind of author to get me to read Buffy/Spike stories. I don't just give that up that grudge for anyone.
