This wasn't how it was supposed to be.
She wasn't supposed to be stuck in a high school library smack dab in the middle of Nowhere, California. It also hadn't been the plan to have a sixteen year old girl with preternatural skills placed in her charge.
This was supposed to be Annie's life, her sister's life. Annie had been the one to train for this, the one who prepared for this. Olivia had just been the one in the shadows, the background, interested in the occult…but more interested in the dark side. The very same dark side that had killed her sister.
Fuck Egyhon the Sleepwalker. Fuck him up his stupid, wrinkly ass.
Someday, she was going to get her chance to make him pay, but today was not that day.
Today was another type of apocalypse:
Parent-teacher night.
It had been a long and boring night so far, with terrible lemonade and equally terrible parents who hadn't even bothered to step foot in the library. At least she had enough of a window that she could see the night's half-moon shimmering through the glass.
"Hey, you're still here."
Olivia looked up from the circulation desk in time to see Jenny Calendar, computer science teacher and monster truck enthusiast, gracefully enter the room. Jenny had been her first friend at Sunnydale High School. They had met by the coffee pot in the teacher's lounge and found that they shared a common love for dark roast coffee, manicures at Shelley's, and the hallway gossip of teenagers. The way Jenny's hair brushed against her shoulders and the way she seemed to save the special smiles just for Olivia didn't hurt matters either. In short, Jenny was an absolutely gorgeous woman and she made life in Sunnydale so much more tolerable.
She quickly slid a bookmark into Patel's Anthology of Demons, Wyrms, and Vampyres. and tucked it into the top drawer.
"Yep, Principal Snyder asked me to man the desk in case any parents want to know what little Junior is checking out of the library," Olivia replied.
Jenny bit back a chuckle. "Do you really think these parents want to know that Junior is browsing the supernatural section, hoping to find old-timey women flashing their boobs at Satan like it's Mardi Gras?"
Olivia tilted her head and pursed her lips, not entirely sure how to respond. She wasn't used to people walking in here and instantly chatting about occult studies. It seemed more like the people in this town had the uncanny ability to ignore what was right in front of them. Not that she had a problem with that. She didn't need really need anyone getting in her Slayer's way.
"Xander Harris," Jenny supplied. "He's surprisingly dense for someone who's best friends with the valedictorian. Does he really think that he can hide The Pagan Rites behind Spiderman vs. the Green Goblin, issue 40? It's not like I was born yesterday.
"Ah, understood now," Olivia said, a smirk crinkling at the corners of her lips. "He is a special boy, isn't he?"
Jenny nodded: "Not as special as you."
Olivia's mouth formed a small 'o' and she rose to her feet. She crossed behind the desk and stepped out in front of Jenny. She tilted her hips, standing there with arms akimbo, and let Jenny's words wash over her.
"I know that we've only gone out for a few cups of coffee," Jenny continued. "But I find myself constantly distracted by thoughts of you and I would like to take you out for dinner tonight. There's this beautiful place near the boardwalk, about a 15 minute drive from here. You can bet your bottom dollar that they have the best rotisserie chicken this side of Los Angeles."
"Rotisserie chicken?"
Jenny laughed. "24/7 super-market. Hot foods, great deli, and all the snacks you care to shove your face with. It may be an unconventional date, but I can promise you the night of your life."
"Can you promise sour cream and onion Pringles?" Olivia asked, stepping closer to Jenny and wrapping her arms around the other woman's neck.
"I can promise that, but I can't promise that I'll kiss you after."
"Then kiss me now."
Jenny didn't hesitate. She captured Olivia's bottom lip with her own and gently suckled until Olivia was squirming with pleasure in her arms.
This was exactly how it was supposed to be.
