Weekend of the Nesting Dolls
Oct. 20th, 2015 10:11 pmI meant to post sooner, but time got away from me. I know
angelskuuipo and
dragonydreams have already done their posts, but I thought I'd share mine as well.
I took a half-day on Friday so I left work around 12:45 pm. I ran some errands, spent some time with my hubby, and watched Once Upon A Time. We left for the airport around 4:45 pm. I got thru security with no problems (though they did have to check under my hair clip to make sure I wasn't hiding anything. It felt very Orange is the New Black.) I bummed around the airport until boarding and mostly focused on reading my book (Slay by Nina Levine). I got a steak sub from Quizno's Express for dinner. It was okay, nothing special. The airplane ride itself was SO long. Ugh. But my seatmate was pretty nice. We chatted for a bit during take-off and I wished him well on his journey to Utah (he had a lay-over in Denver.)
I arrived at the airport around 9 pm and called Danielle to let her know that I made it. It took me awhile to figure out where the girls were, but
dragonydreams had her eyes peeled and they found me before I found them. There were lots of hugs and I thanked them for recovering me from the airport.
We got back to our home away from home and
angelskuuipo fed me pizza waffles. They were delicious, especially with the Arrabiata dipping sauce. We had black forest brownies and pumpkin spice nut/seed butter truffles for dessert.
We stayed up until about midnight gabbing about our lives and I headed up to the loft for sleeping. I also finished my book while I was up there.
angelskuuipo made a Canadian bacon/Egg/Cheese scramble for breakfast Saturday morning. We took our time getting ready because we had to wait about ½ hour between each shower, but we were able to head out early enough to stop at Jim & Nick's BBQ. I am so glad that
angelskuuipo took us here! It was amazingly mouth-wateringly good. I had a house salad with honey mustard dressing and Sionnach and I shared the loaded mac (mmm…pulled pork!) They also had these yummy cheesy corn bread muffins that were delivered to the table a la Olive Garden breadsticks. They were so good. We ended up scarfing down two baskets worth.
We headed to downtown Denver and I got to see the location for the 13th Floor haunted house. No one wanted to go through it with me so I missed out on that opportunity, but my Google-fu showed me that 13th Floor is actually a chain. They have houses in Chicago, Denver, San Antonio, and Phoeniz. We did get to see a bunch of people dressed up like zombies though. It turned out Denver was having its 10th annual Zombie Crawl and there were a ton of people wandering around the city in creepy costumes and make-up. My favorite was the zombie bride.
If/Then more than lived up to my expectations. It had a fun Sliding Doors-esque quality and explored how our lives can be affected by one choice. Idina Menzel was everything I wanted her to be. LaChanze played the supporting actress and she had an equally incredible voice. I didn't realize she'd played one of the Muses in Hercules, but the program said she did so it must be true. It was great fun seeing Anthony Rapp as well, though we agreed that he was basically playing a gay-ish Mark (from Rent). The 2nd act had me in tears though. Sionnach gave me a hug and held my hand for a good chunk of the show.
We went to Work & Class after the show. We arrived about half an hour before their Early Work Release Program (Happy Hour) ended so Sionnach and I got some cheap cocktails (Yucatan Orange Clove. So yum!). We got seated about 30 minutes later and we wound up ordering a ton of different things to try because we couldn't say no. They serve tapas so everything came out on small plates. It was all insanely delicious – we tried the power salad with tempura broccoli, the blue corn empanadas, the goat, the lamb, the sweet potato fries, the leek mashed potatoes, the sautéed veggie side, the chocolate banana tart, and the goat's milk ice cream sundae that was topped with figs and almonds.
It was great to share the food. It made the whole experience more enjoyable.
We came home and watched the film version of Rent because Sionnach had never seen it before. We cried and sang our hearts out. It was also perfect because it meant we got a double dose of Idina/Anthony.
On Sunday, we all went out for breakfast at a place called Steuben's. It was in a renovated auto mechanic shop. We got seated right away. I had the eggs benedict with hashbrowns. I really liked the eggs benedict, but the hashbrowns didn't have the right flavor (I suspect it's because they didn't use Wisconsin cheese as the topping.) We also agreed to split a gluten free peanut butter cheesecake brownie for dessert.
We went to the Denver Zoo to see the Lego installation. I was so amazed by all the animals we saw (both Lego and real.)
Real:

Both:

Lego:

One of the most fun parts was that Thomas dared me to climb through a log. I embraced my inner five year old and accepted the challenge. :D
We finished up at the zoo and I bought a Denver Zoo hoodie with a penguin on it. Then, we had to take Elisabeth to the airport. We said our goodbyes and sent her on her way. *sniffles*
Sionnach and I convinced our hosts to take us back to Jim & Nick's BBQ for dinner. It was wonderful. I tried the turkey and got a side of the mac and cheese because it was just that good. I also had the peach iced tea (most amazing thing ever! It had muddled peaches and just the right amount of sweetness.) I got to watch the last few minutes of the Packer game at the restaurant and I was happy to see that they won. We came home and watched some YouTube videos of some So You Think You Can Dance performances. Then, we settled in to watch Big Hero 6 and ate lemon mousse. I shared the big bed with Sionnach and we stayed up talking long after lights out.
We had another scramble for breakfast on Monday. This one was bacon/egg/cheese. I had a few leftover corn biscuits from Jim and Nick's along with it. We took the van that Danielle had rented back to the Enterprise Center. We went to Scooters for lattes. I had a blended pumpkin spice latte and it was so good! We stopped Ross (Dress for Less) because I'd never been. It was like Goodwill, but had more trendy items. I found two adorable sweater dresses that I can pair with leggings. They squeezed nicely into my backpack. We had lunch at the Dog Haus (gourmet hog dog place.) I tried the Scott Baoili and it was so good. It was topped with bacon, white cheddar cheese, and garlic aioli. It was served on a bun made out of King's Hawaiian bread. We stopped at Nick's Nursery on our way home to peruse the Farmer's Market. I nommed on some honey sticks (blackberry and peach), but didn't buy anything else because...airports.
After this, we headed back to the house. We got Amy packed up into her car and sent her on her way. Danielle took me to the airport. I wound up stopping at the Tattered Covers book store there and picked up a copy of "Love Letters to the Dead" by Ava Dellara. It's a YA novel about a girl who writes letters to celebrities (mostly musicians) that have died. I read it at the airport and on the plane. It was a little hard to get into, but I managed to get through half of it before we landed. I also indulged in a little bit of Ben and Jerry's ice cream (Milk and Cookies.)
Nick picked me up and we got Rocky Rococo's for dinner.
It was a truly amazing trip and I'm so glad I had the chance to go.
I do wish I had an extra day to relax. Being back at work today is tough!
