And letting me know we were done
~My Happy Ending, Avril Lavigne~
Willow rested her head against Angel’s bare chest, tracing circles across his chest. He played with her hair, twisting the red locks around his fingers. She couldn’t believe that he had come to her when he had returned from Hell. When he had told her that she still had a piece of his soul and that he had a piece of hers. It had all sounded so romantic, like some weird little fairy tale. It was nice to finally have someone who returned her affections.
“Willow, we need to talk.” Angel started. In his 243 years of unlife, that was still the hardest sentence to say.
Willow looked up at him with her adorably, dorky grin. “What’s up?”
Angel took in an unnecessary inhale. “I’ve been thinking about us…our future. The life we could have together and I…”
Willow’s dorky smile vanished and a look of concern crossed her face. “What about it?”
“I don’t think its fair to you. You deserve so much more than anything I could give you. You deserve someone who can make love to you and kids and light. You don’t deserve to live a life trapped in shadow. It’s not you, Willow. I sensed your goodness from the moment I met you and I think I’m suffocating it.”
Tears welled up in Willow’s eyes. “I don’t understand. I can’t even keep my goldfish alive. Well, maybe I could have if you hadn’t killed them but Angel, I love you. I don’t care. You tried to kill me in your demon form and I still love you. Doesn’t that mean anything?”
“You don’t care now, Willow, but you will. Five, ten years down the road you are going to want all the things I can’t give you.”
She rolled off the bed and wrapped her arms around her chest. She could feel the tears streaming freely down her cheeks. “Why are you doing this?”
Angel rose from the bed and placed his hands on her shoulder. “I wouldn’t tell you any of this if I didn’t love you.”
Willow whipped around to face him, anger in her eyes. “If you loved me, you couldn’t tell me this ever!” She pounded her fists into his chest.
“After the Ascension, provided we all don’t die, I’m leaving Sunnydale.” Angel said quietly.
“I can’t believe this. This isn’t happening.” Willow felt like her heart had just been twisted, stomped on, and thrown in the garbage. “You can’t leave me here. I’m nothing without you.”
“You may not understand today, Willow, but you will.” Angel hated seeing her like this but he knew she would be much better for it.
“I need to go,” Willow said, desperate to escape the situation. She moved towards the door.
“Willow…” Angel said.
“No,” Willow said as she opened the door. “You’re done talking now. And I’m leaving now.”
Once the door closed behind her, Willow sank to her knees and cradled her head in her hands, letting her tears drip freely onto the cement sidewalk. She couldn’t believe that it was real. It couldn’t be real. It just couldn’t be. She felt like she couldn’t breathe. She wanted him to hold her but he was the one that hurt her. It just didn’t seem fair. When was she going to get her happy ending?
