Today marks the one year anniversary of my undergraduate professor's death. One year ago today a great and orginal woman lost her life because someone decided to get on the freeway in the middle of the afternoon under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

In her honor, I wrote a poem. There are references to God and Christianity so if that bothers you, I don't expect you to read it.

One quick thing before the poem: At 6:30 PM CST, people are invited to light a candle in remembrance. I don't expect any one on my flist to do that but it would still mean a lot to me if you were able to find the time to do it.

On the day you entered heaven
The skies exploded in color – red, oranges, yellows, pinks.
It was if they were announcing your arrival.
But I know that those are your wings.

God knew you wouldn’t settle for white, fluffy ones.
He knew from the moment you set foot on this earth
that you were one of a kind and that you taught others how to get
in touch with their own uniqueness.

He knew that we needed a way to honor and remember you
He knew that we needed your inspiration to get us through the day
He knew that when everything felt dark for us
That all we need to do is look up at the sky at sunset and there you would be.

You will be forever and always
a part of our lives.
And I thank God every day
for letting your spread your wings and soar.

*crying*

I put it in my phone. If I'm anywhere near a candle, one will be lit.

I'm really sorry. Professors can be such wonderful people, and can inspire us so much. What happened was horrible, and it's very good of you to remember her. Thank you for sharing the poem, it's beautiful.

I have kind of a fear of candles (I lost two friends to death by fire), but I will think of her then. Is that okay?

I remember when that happened and I am so sorry again for your loss.

That's perfectly okay. Anything you can do means a lot to me and to her partner. Even if it just taking a moment of silence.
