lzod as a belated birthday present. I tried to make this Willow/Spike, but my muse just wouldn’t let me. So I hope you enjoy it anyways!
When Willow was six years old, her father challenged her to spell the word ‘pulchritude’ and promised to take her out for ice cream if she was able to pull it off. Desperate for attention and approval, her developing brain fired into action and she timidly responded, each syllable falling effortlessly from her lips.
More perturbed than impressed, Ira took her to Malt Madness and let her order a triple-scoop butter brickle in a waffle cone. She devoured it greedily, pleased to be rewarded and pleased that her daddy didn’t back out on the deal.
It was more than a decade before she heard the word again, this time conjugated as an adjective used to describe her beauty. Without hesitation, Willow spelled it out for Tara, tracing the letters over her girlfriend’s flesh and rewarding herself with a treat far sweeter than ice cream.

on 2010-02-06 12:32 am (UTC)And so now I feel like I have to give full disclosure on how I came upon the word "pulchritudinous": I was reading "SAT For Dummies," which turned out to be an engaging and interesting read and I think is responsible for my score going up 200 points the next time I took the test... anyway. So there I am, a high school junior, and I see that word among other rich words like "pusillanimous" and "pugilist," and it just captured my attention. Also at the time, in the All-State Women's Chorus I was in sang the song "Tota Pulchra Es," which is just GAWGEOUS. Observe:

From then on, it's been my favorite word.
