She slides off the bed, picking up her fallen skirt and guiding it back over her hips. The paisley print isn’t enough to cover her shame. Not enough to cover up the fact that she just had sex with Barney. Not enough to cover the fact that she let Barney talk her into sex. That she let Barney break her resolve. That she let Barney hear her pant and moan like a dirty whore.
“That was unexpected,” Barney muttered, turning his head toward the wall.
“Excuse me?” Lily asked, voice cracking. He had been the one to plan this. Had been the one to light a fire under her skin with his words, his touch, his manipulation. “What’s that supposed to be mean?”
Barney shrugged, moving off the bed to retrieve his own clothes. He felt the blood in his veins turn cold, couldn’t even look at her. “You really gotta think what you just did to Marshall, Lily. How it’ll hurt him. He’s not gonna take you back if he knows what you did.”
Lily felt the tears sting in her eyes. She should have just told him to leave. To go to Fisherman’s Wharf. But no, she’d insisted he’d stay. Insisted he’d catch her up on everything. And now…now, she just felt used. “Barney…why are you saying this?”
Barney’s eyes darken, insincerity mask peeling away at the edges. He wants to tell her that she can never go back to Marshall. That’s he gonna lock her in her closet and make her scream in primal bliss for the rest of her life. But that’s not the role he gets to play.
“It’s for your own good. See you in New York, Lily.”
