He’s staring at her; his eyes are crawling over her flesh and it makes her shiver. But it’s not the good kind of shiver. It’s the kind that makes her feel like tiny black spiders are crawling over her, appraising her as if she’s going to be their next meal. As if once hadn’t been enough for them.

“You are a fantastic lover, Penny. Best I’ve ever had. Who would have guessed a little geek like you could rock a superhero’s world?”

The words roll off his tongue in a practiced sweep and she’s not sure he’s faking it. She’s not even sure she’d want it to be genuine so she smiles softly, swallowing down her regret for believing he was someone who could show her the colors of the world.

This never would have happened with Billy.
