The toast has been made, the champagne has flowed (and keeps flowing, actually), and the DJ has started playing a remix of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.”
Following tradition, the single girls at the wedding head out onto the glittering dance floor in groups of twos and threes. The alcohol in their system permits them to cling to each other, but the promise of the bouquet is what keeps competition burning in their eyes and thrumming in their veins.
Ted watches them; though his focus is not on the sway of their hips or the swell of their breasts (Barney’s done enough of that already). Instead, he concentrates on the little things like the way their shoulders tense, the way a few of them take an extra step closer to the bridge, the way one of them looks just like….
The girl.
The girl that….
His memory sticks, seemingly unable to release the information he’s looking for. But he knows that he knows her from somewhere. He’s absolutely 100% that he’s seen that face before. If only he could just….
That’s when he sees it. It’s just several inches of skin sticking out under the hem of her dress. It’s just an ankle, really.
But it’s the ankle…her ankle. The ankle that's attached to the woman he’s been searching for since the decade started.
There’s a whoop from the crowd of bachelorettes and the one, the girl Ted can’t figure out, has her hand in the air, the white lilies held tightly in her fist.
Lily leans over, a smile on her beatific face. “Wouldn’t it be funny if she’s the girl you end up marrying? They always say the one who catches the bouquet today is the one that walks down the aisle tomorrow.”
“Yeah,” Ted replies softly, the corners of his lips twitching into grin as he catches the woman's warm gaze. “That would be hilarious.”
