Title: Devil’s Altar
Author: snogged
Disclaimer: Joss Whedon and co. owns the characters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. George Orwell coined the term “Doublethink.”
Character: Willow (no pairing)
Rating: FRT-13/PG-13
Word count: 100
Warnings: death, angst
Setting: Season 6 – “Bargaining”
Summary: Willow has to take a life to bring a life back.

A/N: written for the [livejournal.com profile] darker_vault March Challenge. Prompt: Sacrifice.

Doublethink.

The simultaneous belief in two conflicting notions, two carefully constructed lies to make herself feel better about this. Pretending this is all about resurrecting Buffy makes it easier to gift the creature with grains, to feel the animal’s tongue caress her skin.

Bambi’s last supper.

When she smiles, taking hold of the deer’s throat, she convinces herself that it’s to offer the deer comfort. She convinces herself that she takes no pleasure in the blood spilling onto her dress.

Most importantly, she convinces herself that it is the deer, and not herself, being sacrificed on the altar of darkness.

Well done. A very dark and insightful look into Willow.

Thanks!

I really wanted to explore that moment in the context of Willow's later descent in darkness during Season 6.
