I have to admit that I had reservations about this episode because of it's close ties to Season 1's Modern Warfare (which I loved and adored). To be frank, I believed the writers were just copping out in the name of a gimmick that worked really well before and it would just seem like a sequel trying to live up the awesomeness that is the original.
My expectations were proven wrong. Very, very wrong.
For the most part, anyway.
But I'll get to that in a second (or you know, 200-300 words) because I need to get this bit of superficial fangirl crushing out of the way.
Alison Brie is SUPER MEGA FOXY AWESOME HOT.
When she leaped down from the ceiling to save "Fat" Neil, I felt myself flush and it wasn't from a bean allergy. I'm glad that the writers gave Annie the bad-ass, kick-ass female role in this episode.
Don't get me wrong, I loved Britta's blazing guns last season, but there's just something about sweet Annie with a neon orange paintball machine gun that's just makes me smile.
The Black Rider was a great addition to the story and I was sad to see him get taken out at the end (though I did a fist-pump for Pierce anyway. He should have gotten some credit for taking out the bad guy.)
Speaking of Pierce, I'm sick of story lines that try to kick him out of the group. Admittedly, he's kind of a huge jerk and has done some things I feel slow to forgive him on. For example... last week, I did seriously hate what he did to Abed and Troy. The whole "work for it, whore" line really bugged the hell out of me. But at the same time, I was hoping that the "fake" heart attack would have been a ploy used by Pierce to win back the trust of the gang, especially since there are already a set of bad guys (and a creepy ice cream cone in a cowboy hat) bent on totally destroying Greendale.
One thing I did like about Pierce this week was that he was the sheriff of the lawless cafeteria town. That part really suited him and it was fun to see the type of environment he created. Plus, it was good to see some more school characters like Starburns and the dancing girl who was (I'm pretty sure) crushing on "Fat" Neil last week.
And so my arbitrary grade for this episode is an A-.
I'm anxious to watch Part 2. Thursday can't come fast enough.
