Woman charged in fatal crash

A 19-year-old Mount Horeb woman was charged Friday with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and first-degree reckless homicide in Wednesday's crash that killed a UW-Whitewater psychology professor on Interstate 39-90 near Edgerton.
Samantha J. Young is being held in Dane County Jail on $20,000 cash bail and will be subject to bail monitoring if bond is posted. She faces up to 85 years in prison and extended supervision on the two felony charges.
According to a criminal complaint, Samantha J. Young told police that she drank a pint of cognac and a little vodka, ingested "one line" of cocaine and was taking medication for anxiety prior to the 5:45 p.m. crash that killed Paula B. Poorman, 56, of Madison.
Witnesses said Young was driving north at speeds of up to 120 mph as she approached a group of vehicles and struck the car Poorman was driving, the complaint said. Poorman's car rolled over in the median and came to rest in the southbound lanes.
According to the complaint, Young told police she didn't recall being in a car crash and said that a semitrailer had hit her.
Assistant District Attorney Mike Verveer called Young a "public menace" and "a continued threat to the community," saying her driving record includes at least four previous crashes, including one involving injuries.
Young has been in the Dane County Drug Court Program after pleading guilty to prior charges of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, Verveer said, adding that she faces certain termination from that program and sentencing on those charges.
Blood test results from the crash are pending, Verveer said.
