Pairing/Characters: Spike/Dawn - Friendship with a hint of Romance
Timeline: Takes place after season 5. I deem it AU because Buffy didn’t come back from the dead.
Disclaimer: The characters in this story belong to Joss Whedon and many other corporations. I make no claim to them. I just like playing in their sandbox.

A/N: This was my plot bunny for the ficathon:
For Rachel - I enjoy friendshippy Spike/Dawn, particularly post-Buffy's death, with hints of romance.
I hope this is okay, hun.
Today marked the two year anniversary of the day Buffy jumped off the tower and Spike wished that she could be here to see the woman her kid sister had grown into.
"She'd be proud of you, y'know?" Spike said, smiling softly at the sight of his little Niblet. Willow and Tara were driving her to the University today and there were mountains of suitcases all over the living room.
Dawn sniffled, fighting to keep a fresh batch of tears from forming in her eyes. "Stop it, Spike. You're gonna make me all splotchy."
Spike pulled the girl into his arms and breathed in the scent of her hair. It was a sweet mixture of cinnamon and berries. It was so different from how Buffy used to smell. A unique scent all on its own. "No tears then. Still can't believe you're leaving me behind, pet."
"I'm not really going very far. Sunnydale U is only like 30 minutes away and you can totally come visit me. I bet all the girls in my dorm will be jealous of my hot vampire friend. They'll all be dying to know if you're my boyfriend and stuff. Which, of course, you are so not but I might just let them think it, if that's okay. Or they'll want you to provide us with beers or something."
Spike chuckled. "If you think I'm providing the liquor for your drunken parties, then you're completely off your rocker." He was grateful for the disintegration of her grief. He liked seeing her smile.
"You're such a bad liar, Spike. You'll totally bring us alcohol. I mean, you're still kinda evil even though you've got the chip and everything. And isn't evil all about letting underage kids do whatever they want?"
Spike cocked his hip and gave her a swaggering glance. "Evil's much more than that, pet. Evil's all about torture, and maiming, and setting things on fire, and eating babies, and making women scream out in pleasure and pain."
"Is it also about being an overconfident, arrogant jerk?" Dawn quipped.
"Hush it, missy. Don't you be taking an attitude with me."
"Or what? You'll bite me?" Dawn challenged, her smile widening. She enjoyed their banter. She was going to miss times like this when she went off to college. She figured she'd call him just to see how many buttons she could press before he got frustrated and hung up on her.
Spike's eyes flashed and his fangs dropped.
Dawn giggled.
"What's so funny, Bit? You're looking at the face of evil. It's not funny." He growled and his features shifted back into human form.
"You're cute, Spike. When you get all 'grr' and stuff." Dawn threw her arms around him in a bear hug. "I'm gonna miss you."
Spike's features softened. "I'm gonna miss you too, Bit. You give those professors hell for me, okay?"
"Of course, I will. And I’ll only go out with the cutest, bad boys." Dawn buried her head in his shoulder, inhaling the scent of cigarettes and leather. A few tears squeaked through her eye ducts. This was really happening. She was going out on her own for the first time and she felt more terrified doing this than she ever had facing one of Sunnydale's many demons.
"You'll be all right, luv," Spike whispered, patting her back. “As for bad boys, I’d best be the only one you want to go out with. I’ll kill any others who try.”
The front door creaked open and Willow poked her head in.
"Ready to go, freshman?"
Dawn pried herself off of Spike and wiped her eyes. "Yeah. I'll call you when I get there, okay?"
"I expect nothing less, pet," Spike replied, watching her grab her suitcases and walk out the door. This house was going to feel empty without her. It wouldn't feel right staying. Maybe he could find a nice crypt off the beaten path somewhere. Willow and Tara would benefit from having the house to themselves anyways.
Besides, Willow would stake him if she knew he was willing to drive up to Sunnydale U with a six pack and a bottle of Jack for his Niblet. It was probably better to play it safe.
