Oct. 14th, 2012 10:11 amThis weekend so far has been a journey through the chills and thrills, the spooky and macabre, the fun and the scary.
Nick and I ventured out to a local-ish haunted house on Friday night (~20 minute drive) called the Chamber of Horrors. It had some great mazes (one made out of shredded blankets where the way was blocked by monsters, one made out of chicken wire so you could see the way out, but couldn't get there.) It also had an infinity tunnel and I'm an absolute sucker for that. I felt the monsters were creepy, but most executed the long hard stares to get under your skin instead of full-out saying "Boo" or what have you. I did like the monster who surprised me by standing right behind me as I was at the car, getting myself ready for the autumn chill. Nick saw him and said the monster really worked hard to stay behind me and then Nick laughed a plenty when I finally did turn around. The house was also sponsoring a zombie hunt, which was a lot of fun. They had a pick-up truck with paintball guns attached to it and they drove you through a cornfield. Actors dressed as zombies would lumber towards us and we would try to take them out. There were only three of us shooting, but we still had a lot of fun.
We also went to one of my favorite Italian restaurants in the area and I tried their Portabella Ravioli. It was delish!
On Saturday, we met up with friends (Kit, Richard, Steve, and Jennifer) at the Mineshaft in Hartford, WI (the town where I was essentially raised.) We had awhile to wait before they could seat us, so Jennifer and I entertained ourselves with the huge Connect 4 game that was set-up in the game room. Then, we went down to the bar and I found myself falling in love with a drink called a Jeremiah Bull Frog. It was a mixture of Jeremiah Weed Sweet Tea Vodka and Raspberry Iced Tea. I typically don't have more than one drink at a restaurant, but I made an exception for this and wound up having two.
Afterwards, we went to Terror On Rural Street. This is a haunt that's set-up in an old canning factory and has been part of my life for the last 14 years or so. My dad is involved with the design, the effects, and everything else that goes into building an awesome house. We got our tickets and found my dad. He gave us the VIP treatment and we got to cut the line and go straight into the line-up room. It may have been the booze given me some crazy confidence, but I wound up leading the troops through the house.
There were multiple occasions where I found myself screaming, cursing, and in one instance, crying, because the monsters had my number last night. It was ridiculously fun though and it was very obvious to me that the monsters had stepped up their game since opening weekend (I had gone through about a week ago because I helped my mom sell tickets on opening night.) Afterward, my dad gave us a behind-the-scenes tour and we saw the security footage room, the make-up/costume room, the break room, and the workshop. It was really quite cool (even if I've seen a lot of it before. :P)
