I am not agreeing with Akin, I feel his comments were stupid. I believe he misspoke, and that his comments weren't said in malice towards women. He has apologized, realizing that his statement was stupid, and I believe in giving people a chance to redeem themselves and become informed on the topic.

I have a very close friend who was conceived through a rape situtation. Her mother chose to give her life and give her up for adoption. She is a wonderful person, and I am so greatful that her mother didn't compound the crime that was committed upon her by taking the life of her unborn child.

I also have a sister that had an abortion when her boyfriend deserted her. She chose at my father's insistance to end her child's life. She suffers from this decision every day of her life. She can no longer have children, and this has been very painful to her. No one wants to talk about this aspect though. A lot of people speak about abortion in very clinical terms, but don't stop and consider the damage to the woman's soul after she has made this "choice". I am pro-life, and after having had two childen, I can say that it would have been murder for me to have ended either one of their lives, not matter how they were conceived.

I understand your stance, and you will have to make your choice. I was only chastizing Obama on using this in his campaign. He has misspoken often, as has his VP Biden. Biden's comments calling Romney and Ryan racists who wants to "put y'all back in chains" was extremely offensive to me. Shameful rhetoric from the Vice President of the United States. Politicians ALL need to be held to a higher standard and realize that what they say does matter.


Honestly, I can't even bring myself to respond to her.

All I can do is defriend.

And I'm thinking it might not hurt to outright block her.

Yeah, in a situation like that, I would tend to agree with you. I guess I feel like that should be covered under some kind of custody agreement, or something. He can choose to legally give up his rights to the child, which starts immediately, or he can choose to be physically and financially supportive, which extends for 18 years.

Obviously, that is not the law, but it should be! :)

I don't know you, but I have some questions so I hope you don't mind.

I guess this raises some concerns for me. I don't know if you've seen the article on CNN (link at bottom) about how several states allow rapists to sue for parental rights. I'm a worst case scenario type of thinker and my fear is that a rule/law that requires a woman to get the agreement of the father could go badly in situations like rape where it is about power.

I certainly think it is always something a woman should discuss with her partner. I mean if the woman doesn't want the baby I do think there are other options such as adoption or the father perhaps raising the child. However, I think in some cases it needs to be up to just the woman. Yes, it takes two to make a child, but it's the woman that has to carry the baby and unless legal arrangements are made before the baby is born it is always the mother who (at least in my experience which is not great) is automatically assumed to get custody/responsibility.

Personally, I hate this whole argument because I do feel there are other options more in line with my belief, but my beliefs are not everyone's and I just don't think I have the right to speak for them, or decide what they can do.

The idea of allowing a convicted rapist to sue for custody is just... It's so ridiculous, I can't even.

I mean, wouldn't they be too busy serving time behind bars to raise a child?

But in cases where it was consensual and the father is in the picture, wanting be a father, I don't think that a woman should get to make that choice for them both.

I also don't think a woman should be legally allowed to not inform the father if she gets pregnant.

Pretty much the worst thing I could imagine (which I'll never have to deal with personally, because I'm a woman!) is someone keeping a child a secret, or aborting a pregnancy, so I never got a chance to know that child.

I put myself in a potential father's shoes, where his wife/girlfriend/one-night-stand aborts, when he's desperate for the chance to know his baby? Yeah, that's horrible.

It is a very muddy situation, you're right. And it doesn't look like there will ever be one definitive answer, because every situation is different.

Because they can sue for custody before they can be convicted? And since apparently people in south don't believe in children from rape? IDK. It seems highly sketchy to me.

I can't agree more with your one size not fitting everyone conclusion. I think the whole situation is just too complex and in many cases just sad.
