snogged: ([Doctor Who] Maxing Out Cool)
[personal profile] snogged
Taking an extra day off a work gave me the chance to get a whole lot of stuff accomplished. This included a write-up of my trip as well as some photos uploaded to LJ scrapbook.

First, here are the photos from the trip. I'm not sure why this happened, but a few sneaked out of order. Hopefully you can follow along okay though.

Friday:

I drove to my friend Sabrina's on Friday morning and, because she is an awesome friend, she drove me to the airport.

The flight wound up being delayed by an hour because apparently, it had gotten delayed by a few minutes at every airport it had stopped it and therefore the time had compounded. I used the extra time to call Cathy and let her know about the delay and then read my book - The Kid Who Climbed Everest by Bear Grylls.

Cathy, my friend, had actually flown in from Ohio on Friday because she was out there for work so she was waiting in baggage claim when I arrived at LaGuardia. She told me that a car was going to pick us up to take us back to her house in Stamford, CT. That car was a shiny, black BMW sedan with black leather seats. It made me feel quite fancy. :P

Once we got to their house in Stamford, I met their Italian greyhounds- Anubis and Zeus- and then we grabbed Catherine's husband, David, and headed off to Kona Grill for dinner. Cathy got us an appetizer - seven spice ahi tuna - that was delicious and captured the complexity of flavor without being too spicy to handle. I had a dragon roll, a crab crunch roll, and a designer cocktail called a blackberry tea. Then, Cathy and I posed in front of the giant fish tank and we headed back to my home away from home. David went to bed right away and Cathy and I watched the movie, All Faire's In Love, with the doggies before we went to bed too.

--

On Saturday, we spent the day in New York City and let me just say that it was amazing and awesome and exhausting because we saw a heckuva lot in one day.

We started out at Volta in Stamford, CT where we ate crepes for breakfast. I had a brie crepe that came with field greens, walnuts, and pears. It was really good, but super filling.

Then, we got on the express train to Grand Central Station where I saw the Apple Store. We also navigated the wonderful world of online tickets to try and find seats for the Book of Mormon. Cathy managed to find a set of three tickets that were about $275 a piece in the orchestra section so we called this site up and arranged to have the tickets sent to Cathy's email. This meant a trip to J.P. Morgan Chase where Cathy works. After we got the tickets printed off, we headed down Park Avenue to Central Park. I got the whirlwind tour and saw Bethesda Fountain, Bow Bridge, and the Bramble.

We went to the Met and had drinks on the garden rooftop. To get there, we passed through the Greek, Roman, and African exhibits so that was cool. When we left the Met, there was a German-American parade going on so we had to high-tail it back thru Central Park to get a cab because it was impossible to get one by the Met. We found a taxi and managed to get to the EUGENE O'NEIL Theater. Sadly, we missed the opening number for Book of Mormon, but our seats were fabulous and I was star struck by Nikki James so I let go of that pretty quickly.

I sent you and Nick text messages during intermission because I was squeeing.

After the show, I picked up a stuffed frog that says "This Frog Will Change Your Life" on it's tummy as well as one of the nice programs.

After the Book of Mormon, we walked over to Bryant Park and I paid for Cathy and I to ride on the carousel. They had a green frog as one of the animals so I naturally gravitated to that. Across the street from Bryant Park was a little chocolate shop. We stopped in to use the bathroom as well as get some nummies. I ordered a drink called the Salted Lily, which was dark chocolate, caramel and sea salt. It came with a free chocolate. SWEET!

Then we walked over to the New York Public Library and I posed with the lions.

After that, we headed over to the Empire State Building. David bought our tickets and paid extra to get us to the very top (102 floors.) I had a bit of a fandom collision there because kept thinking about Ted Mosby's Fun Facts About The Empire State Building until I got up to the 86th floor and saw the spire. That was when I started thinking about Doctor Who and the Daleks from the third season.

We caught a cab after the Empire State Building and did a brief walk through China Town. Then, we saw the San Gennaro Festival in Little Italy. It was crazy packed! Then, we got on the Subway back to Grand Central Station, had to run through Grand Central to get to our train, and collapsed into the seats once we got on it.

We ate dinner at a place in Stamford called Aria's. It was beautiful and the food was amazing. I got some butternut squash soup and butternut squash tortellini. I also had a nice moment of randomness when I was washing my hands in the bathroom and couldn't find the paper towels. Instead they had these wooden crates of individual terrycloth hand towels that you dropped into a hamper when you were done.

When we got home, I took a shower to ease my muscles because my leg was aching pretty bad from all the walking and then I crashed.

--

On Sunday morning, Cathy and David made coffee, chocolate chip waffles (the Eggo kind), and eggs for breakfast. Then, we opened their magical Ren Faire closet and Cathy let me borrow her gorgeous gypsy skirt .

We took their Prius down to Tuxedo Park and managed to find a parking spot, despite it being crazy crowded.

We got onto the grounds and saw the Son of Sandlar shop. They primarily sell boots and since I was in my Teva sandals (far more comfortable than the ballet flats I normally where at Bristol), I wound up being convinced to try on a boot. While I admit that they were nice, I also didn't want to drop $500 dollars on them. ran into Cathy's brother, Chris. Chris was super cool and he and I got to chatting pretty quickly as we walked. I asked him he if knew where to find the Black Dragon shop because that's the shop my friend, Lord Raven from Bristol owns. He took me over there, but Raven hadn't come downstairs yet so we wandered off to check out this hand-dyed silk shop. As we were perusing the pashminas, I caught site of Lord Raven and gave him a hug. Then, we went and checked out the Vixens En Garde show. They were performing Titus Andronicus. It was cheesy, but entertaining.

From there, we walked to the pub. I got honey mead, Catherine got mulled wine, and David got a beer. At the pub, I was introduced to Chris's girlfriend, Mary, who is absolutely amazing. I also met some barbarians and they were pretty cool. Across the street from the pub was a mug shop and I fell in love with this wooden mug that was red and black striped. I couldn't resist it. :)

We got baked potatoes for lunch and they were topped with butter, sour cream, cheese, and sauteed mushrooms. MMMM...MMM...TASTY!

After lunch, we saw a few more stores and spent some time in a jewelery shop because Mary was in there. At this point, Mary was wearing a cape made out of bunny furs because she was cold. One of the shop workers (Josh) came over and started singing: "Bunnies! Bunnies! It must be bunnies!" I gave him a high five for singing songs from the Buffy musical and we wound up serenading folks with a few other songs from that episode.

Then, we saw "The Greatest Pirate Story (N)Ever Told," which was truly hilarious. It was like "Who's Line Is It Anyway?" with Pirates. After that, we ended up back at the Black Dragon shop and Raven asked me if I could sit and watch his chess set for him while he took a short break. I agreed and wound up doing a little hocking for them as well. (Mostly because it's really fun to shout: "PRETTY THINGS! SHINY THINGS!") I also watched Lord Raven lose two chess games to one of his students. That was pretty entertaining.

We caught back up with Chris and Mary at another pub and then it was off to Moresca's for me so I could buy my bodice. I wound up getting a pretty burgundy Khadija bodice with a black chemise.

We left Faire after my purchase and headed back to CT.

We ate dinner at Minnetto's, which is another Italian place. This time I got pumpkin ravioli.

Then, we watched the premiere of Saturday Night Live because they had TIVO'd it. I thought it was mostly funny.

After our viewing party, it was time for packing and bed.

--

On Monday, Cathy drove me to the airport before she had to go to work so I got there plenty early. I wound up getting an almond croissant and a vanilla iced cappuccino from the little coffee shop and I stopped by Hudson Booksellers and picked up Sarah Silverman's memoirs.

I read a good chunk of my book Personal Demons by Stacia Kane and chatted with a lady that I recognized from my flight out of Milwaukee on Friday. It turns out her son has mild autism and works with the DVR in Waukesha County. It also turned out that she went to see Book of Mormon with her daughter on Sunday and enjoyed it. I found it quite cute when she asked me - in a real quite voice, of course - whether or not Elder Cunnigham and Nabalungi actually have sex at the end of "Baptize Me," and I laughed and said sex/losing their virginity was just a metaphor/double entendre.

Once I got to Mitchell Airport, Sabrina picked me up and I spent some time with her, her son Anthony, and her two daycare kids - Tay (age 3) and Henry (age 3 months). Then, I made the drive home, ate some dinner with Nick, and fell asleep around 9-ish last night.

Feels good to be home, but I definitely think I'll be back in NYC someday soon. There's still so much to do and see there!

Agreed!
There's a crazy ton of stuff to do in NYC.

I definitely want to go back to the theater district though. :)

Thanks! I was torn between the burgundy and the bright red, but I think I made the right choice. :)
