Poll: What Makes For "Good" Smut?
Jun. 1st, 2010 10:28 amI'm quite certain this is an question that's been asked in various forms from various people, but I figure it can't hurt to take a stab at it within my own corner of the Livejournal universe.
Please keep in mind that my goal is not to limit this question to a certain fandom. All fandoms are welcome. This includes those folks who just love a good old-fashioned work of fiction or non-fiction that has nothing to do with a television show, a movie, a role-playing game book, etc.
Also, please feel free to be as objective or as subjective as you desire and most importantly, have fun with it.

on 2010-06-02 12:40 am (UTC)Most of the time when I read a smut scene, I practically skip the descriptions and catch up on the action by reading the dialogue. Of course, it takes a talented author to make it sound deliciously dirty and not head-bangingly corny.
Also, as I'm a woman, I want emotions. And not necessarily romance. I'm talking fear, humiliation, shame, desperation (OMG, desperation is so hot), conflicted desires, feeling manipulated...
Okay, so I'm a kinky bitch as per the above, but really, sounds/dialogue and emotions get me into it. I mostly don't care where someone's arm is or whathaveyou.
Also, regarding pairing - if it's something that canonically can be feasible, then I'm cool. If you're gonna throw out a completely AU scenario with wacky characters, I'm gonna need some explanation about why they're together and how the relationship works, otherwise I'm gonna be thrown COMPLETELY out of the story, regardless of how good the actual smut is.

on 2010-06-02 01:19 am (UTC)The only trouble with sound is if someone is writing is to mimic a porn movie (ex. "uh-uh-UHHHHH" as opposed to the more desirable: "She moaned softly, rocking her hips to meet his gentle thrusts.")
