Found this article online today.

For Many Grads, The Old College Try's Not Enough .

It's depressing, but sadly accurate, especially given my job drama with the Pauquette Center and the fact that I spent most of this past year working as a data entry/office temp.

I also find it depressing that this article's title did not use an apostrophe correctly. :/

:( I hope things get better for you too! *hugs tight*

(And they actually did use an apostrophe correctly. It's really informal - a conjunction for "try is" - but it's grammatically correct. /is a Ted)

(That may be the case, but none of my Google searches could confirm your statement.)

As a literature major who has been working as an accountant for more than twenty years now, I'd say the article is accurate. Wish I had something more useful to say.

It would be better if the job I was hired for officially came into existence, but I have no control over that. Hell, the owners of the place don't even have control over it because it's all paperwork that needs to be filed and turned around and all that rot.

It really is sucky. I try not to feel too defeated about my own career prospects but it can definitely be tough. Right now I just have to focus on being lucky to have a steady paycheck.

(And I would agree with Phoe; try's = "try is" so I'd say correct. I don't like the wording of the headline in general though.)

Steady paychecks are definitely good things.

(I will echo what I said to Phoenix. My searches on Google did not indicate any consensus on this. It's not even part of urbandictionary.com)

I don't know why it would be on urban dictionary... it's just a general construct of grammar-- 's is a conjunction of a word + is. Example: Tara's going to the zoo. That's how I read the article, anyway?

While I will agree that it's a contraction, try's is not remotely formal and as an article published by the Chicago Tribune, it really should be 'try is.'

P.S. That's for sure!! i'm glad you've been able to find a few hours with the autism project until your steady job starts. :)

4 hours a week at $10/hr is not a steady way to make a living, however.

Sadly, that has been the case in New Zealand for many years as well.

I've been, like, mouthing that headline. Even if they were using the conjunction as Try Is, it just sounds weird. That's the best title they could make?

Anyways. As a junior in college, this is my biggest fear. I've always been able to deal with my family's financial issues as I would think well, I'm getting a degree, I can get a job and have a steady paycheck when I'm an adult, and it'll be okay. And yeah, I'm planning now on going to grad school partly because of the job market. The whole situation feels so hopeless sometimes.
