The 37-year-old woman whose body was discovered buried behind a Portage rental home Friday was strangled to death, preliminary autopsy results showed Saturday.
Columbia County Medical Examiner Mark Playman found that the woman also had been subjected to physical abuse. The claim was based upon injuries found on her body.
"That is our preliminary information," Columbia County Medical Examiner Marc Playman said Saturday afternoon after officials completed an autopsy on the woman's body.
Authorities believe they have discovered the woman's identity, but have not released her name. Police said they are attempting to contact members of her family before releasing the information and plan to verify her identity through a DNA analysis and fingerprinting. Police said Friday that the woman disappeared around Memorial Day. It was unclear how long her body was buried in the back yard.
The woman's two children, an 11-year-old boy who was found tortured and locked in a closet Thursday and a 15-year-old girl, continued to live at the 304 W. Oneida St. home with two other women and a man. All three are in Columbia County Jail on tentative charges of child abuse. Candace Clark, 23, and Michaela Clerc, 20, also are expected to be charged with obstruction of justice for lying to police about their identities and providing other false information to investigators. They were arrested shortly after police arrived at the house to investigate a child abduction case Thursday. Clark was wanted by authorities for questioning related to a September 2006 kidnapping. Police said Clark abducted her 2-year-old child from protective custody in Lake County, Florida.
Micheal Sisk, 25, also lived at the residence and is being questioned in connection with the woman's death. Sisk was arrested at a Greyhound bus station in Milwaukee Friday. The 15-year-old found at the residence also is in the custody of juvenile authorities. Police said the girl initially tried to hide the location of her mother's body from police during questioning Thursday, but later told police the body was buried in the back yard the following day. A cadaver dog was brought in to narrow the area where police dug to find the woman's corpse.
Police said the woman's body was discovered at 2:20 p.m. Friday about 3 feet deep in a recently dug garden behind the home.
Three young girls belonging to Clark also were found at the home. Police said none of the youngest girls appeared to have been abused, but one of them was malnourished. The girls have been placed into protective custody.
Portage Police Department Lt. Mark Hahn said the boy remained in guarded condition at University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison on Saturday. The three adults are scheduled to appear in court at 2 p.m. Wednesday for a bond hearing.
Police said the group moved into the Portage rental home in February after living in several motels in Wisconsin Dells. Prior to entering Wisconsin, authorities said the group had lived in Florida, Maine, Kentucky, Tennessee and Colorado.
Hahn said all four of the adults were friends who had met each other while in Florida.
More details emerge
None of the children found at the residence were ever enrolled in Portage schools and the 11-year-old boy had been the victim of educational neglect, Hahn said Saturday.
"I think it's more the neglect of providing education," Hahn said in response to a question about whether the child had any learning disabilities. "Not that he doesn't have potential ... it's more a matter of he was never given the adequate education he should have received."
The boy was emaciated when police found him and had burns all over his body caused by scalding water that had been sprayed on him as well as boiling water that was poured over him. Police said he also had been whipped with electrical cords.
The abuse was used by the adults in the home as punishment for the boy.
"They said if he would misbehave or if he didn't clean his section of the house that he was punished," Portage Police Chief Ken Manthey said Friday.
Columbia County District Attorney Jane Kohlwey compared his condition to pictures of people released from World War II concentration camps.
"It's horrible what we're seeing."
This is the town my boyfriend lives in. I know these sorts of things happen all over the place but it makes it even worse when it is this close to home.
